Are Siberian Cats Really Hypoallergenic?

One of the most remarkable and sought-after traits of the Siberian breed is its hypoallergenic qualities. While no cat is 100% allergy-free, many allergy sufferers find they can live comfortably with a Siberian.

The Science Behind It: Fel d 1

Most people believe they are allergic to cat dander (hair). However, the true culprit is a protein called Fel d 1, which is found in a cat's saliva, tears, and sebaceous (skin) glands. When cats groom themselves, they transfer this protein onto their coat.

Siberians produce a REDUCED LEVEL of FEL D1 due to a protein sequence missing from their DNA. Only pure-bred Siberian cats have this genetic advantage, so choose your Breeder carefully if this trait is a priority for you!

Does Color or Sex Matter?

It is important to note that the DEGREE to which individuals react can vary from cat to cat, and color to color. Therefore, if your allergies are moderate to severe, you should choose a local breeder and test your allergies specifically with the kitten you will be bringing home.
